Photoblog: Off-season in Provence

Evening lights around the port of Cassis, France. During the summer, the area is hopping with tourists, but in mid-October, locals shared the area with just a handful of visitors.

A farewell feast at a relative's house in Brignoles, France included fresh figs, boiled shrimp and three dozen oysters.

The mountains between Aix en Provence and the Mediterranean historically served as a source of bauxite. Additionally several caves in the region feature rock art dated back some 30,000 years, attesting to the neolithic civilization that existed in the region.

In Brignoles, France, we stayed with my aunt and her husband, a retired radiologist and former mayor of the town who now devotes himself to restoring and repairing pipe organs at churches all around France. In the quiet courtyard of their downtown home, I had a chance to reflect on tourism and travel, thinking about how nice it is to visit a town that hasn't completely sold its soul to the tourism industry.
